The political crisis in Rivers State has deepened following serious allegations against suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The claims were made by Dr. George Nwaeke, a former Head of Service in the state, who recently resigned from Fubara’s government.
Nwaeke accused the governor of orchestrating the 2023 bombing of the State House of Assembly Complex to prevent his impeachment by lawmakers loyal to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. He also alleged that a bag of money was given to Edison Ehie, Fubara’s former Chief of Staff, to carry out the attack.
Additionally, Nwaeke claimed that Governor Fubara was planning to sabotage oil facilities in the Niger Delta to create problems for President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He alleged that Fubara planned to start the attacks in non-Ijaw areas to divert attention from his own people. Another claim suggested that Fubara had secret meetings with opposition politicians to support a Northern candidate, possibly Bala Mohammed, in the 2027 election.
These statements have caused a major political debate, with Fubara’s and Wike’s supporters clashing online. Meanwhile, Nwaeke’s wife, Florence, expressed concerns for her husband’s safety, hinting that he might be under pressure to make these allegations.
The PDP and APC have responded with opposing views. PDP spokesperson Sydney Gbara dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, suggesting that Nwaeke was being used by Fubara’s opponents. He challenged Nwaeke to provide evidence and accused him of trying to tarnish the governor’s reputation.
Gbara also pointed out that Nwaeke remained in office when these alleged events took place and questioned why he did not resign earlier if they were true.
On the other hand, APC spokesman Ikenga Chibike insisted that the allegations were too serious to ignore. He urged security agencies to investigate, emphasizing that Nwaeke, as a former top government official, might have inside information.
Governor Fubara has denied all allegations, claiming that Nwaeke has been influenced by political opponents. As the situation unfolds, many are watching closely to see if any concrete evidence will emerge or if this remains a political battle between rival factions.
