Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has emphasized the need for better treatment of inmates in Nigerian correctional facilities. He believes detainees should be rehabilitated and reintegrated into society rather than just being punished.
Governor Otti shared this message on Saturday when he met with members of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Reformatory Institutions, led by Chairman Chinedu Ogah. He assured them that his government is committed to improving the Aba and Umuahia Correctional Centers.
He revealed that renovation plans for the facilities are already in progress, with designs submitted and awaiting approval. However, he also raised concerns about land encroachment at the Aba correctional facility and promised to reclaim the land for its proper use.
The governor stated that his administration would work with the Correctional Services to reduce overcrowding. He plans to ensure that inmates held for minor offenses are released, rehabilitated, and reintegrated into society.
Since taking office in 2023, Otti has already overseen the release of several inmates, particularly those imprisoned for minor or politically motivated offenses. He has now directed his Special Adviser on Security to work with the Controller of Correctional Services for another review.
Chinedu Ogah, the Chairman of the House Committee, praised Governor Otti for his contributions to prison reform and overall infrastructural development in Abia State. He noted that their visit was part of the committee’s oversight duties to ensure proper management of correctional institutions.
Governor Otti’s efforts highlight the importance of treating inmates with dignity and giving them a second chance at life.
