Lagos Police arraign driver over death of Bumpa co-founder

The Lagos State Police Command has taken legal action against Biola Adams-Odutayo, who was involved in the tragic death of Adetunji “Teejay” Opayele, a co-founder of Nigerian tech start-up Bumpa.

Opayele, a 32-year-old software engineer, died in a fatal accident on March 4, 2025, along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island, Lagos. Reports say he was riding his power bike when a car, allegedly driven by Adams-Odutayo, hit him. Adams-Odutayo is a healthcare professional working at an insurance brokerage firm.

Following the accident, a petition surfaced on Change.org demanding justice for Opayele. The petition claimed that Adams-Odutayo refused to assist the injured Opayele after the crash because she did not want blood stains on her car. This claim sparked public outrage, with many Nigerians calling for legal action.

On March 12, 2025, after completing their investigation, the Lagos police arraigned Adams-Odutayo in Court 1, Tinubu. She was charged with reckless and careless driving, which allegedly led to Opayele’s death. The court granted her bail and scheduled the next hearing for April 16, 2025.

Lagos police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the court proceedings in a post on X, assuring the public that the police remain committed to fairness and justice in the case.

The case continues to draw attention as Nigerians await further developments in the pursuit of justice for Opayele.
