Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of mistreating women during his tenure as the governor of Akwa Ibom State.
Atiku made this claim following recent allegations of sexual harassment against Akpabio by suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
During an interview with journalist Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie on the program Untold Stories, Atiku was asked about corruption reports against Akpabio when he was governor. In response, he also pointed out the alleged mistreatment of women under Akpabio’s leadership.
Responding, he said
‘’Yes. Not only was he corrupt, but he also had a history of abusing women.”
The conversation also touched on the 2027 elections, with Atiku being asked if he plans to run for President again. Additionally, he was questioned about who would lead any coalition aiming to challenge the current government.
Responding, the former Vice President said
‘’In 2014, we had a similar merger, with several candidates contesting. We all ran for president and one emerged, and we all supported him. Nigeria has never been in greater need of credible leadership than now.
Atiku was further asked whether he was surprised by how quickly the National Assembly approved the state of emergency. However, his main focus remained on the allegations against Akpabio, reinforcing concerns about leadership accountability in Nigeria.
‘’No. The leadership is corrupt, and I have no apologies for saying that. They could do anything. The Senate President is known for such behavior, even as a governor”
