Rivers State is experiencing major leadership changes. Dr. George Nwaeke, the Head of Service, has stepped down from his position. His resignation was confirmed in a statement signed by Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, the Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Sole Administrator.
The government thanked Dr. Nwaeke for his service, even though he was in office for only a short time, and wished him success in the future.
Following Dr. Nwaeke’s resignation, Dr. (Mrs.) Iyingi Brown has been appointed as the acting Head of Service. She previously served as the Permanent Secretary for Welfare in the Office of the Head of Service. She will hold this position temporarily until a permanent replacement is chosen.
Vice Admiral Ibas congratulated Dr. Brown on her new role and reassured the public of his commitment to keeping Rivers State stable and peaceful.
Dr. Nwaeke’s resignation comes just a week after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State. This decision led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Nma Ordu, and all members of the State Assembly.
Many political leaders, civil society groups, and residents have criticized the federal government’s decision. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have also voiced their concerns.
Despite these challenges, the government has promised to focus on peace and stability in Rivers State during this period of uncertainty.
