Suspended Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Kogi West Senator Sunday Karimi had a heated argument over her removal from the Senate.
Karimi, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), supported the decision to suspend Natasha, saying it was necessary. He claimed her actions in the Senate were embarrassing and had damaged Kogi State’s reputation.
Speaking to journalists, Karimi said Natasha’s behavior proved that former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello was right about her.
“All our advice to her fell on deaf ears. Yahaya Bello saw this coming,” Karimi stated.
He added that Natasha ignored his efforts to resolve the issue before it led to a confrontation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which resulted in her suspension.
In response, Natasha dismissed Karimi’s claims and suggested that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) should conduct drug tests on senators. According to her, this would help prevent irrational decisions in the Senate.
“NDLEA needs to conduct periodic tests on senators. That will save the parliament from erratic legislative hallucinations,” she said through her media aide, Israel Arogbonlo.
She explained that drug integrity tests were already used in some political processes. She mentioned that NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa had earlier proposed similar tests for political aspirants and that Kano State’s electoral commission had tested candidates for drug use.
“If senators are tested, it will help ensure fair decision-making and better governance,” Natasha added.
Her suspension followed a clash with Senate President Akpabio, sparking political controversy in Kogi State and beyond.
