Rivers emergency rule will end as soon as sanity is restored – FG

The Nigerian government has promised to lift the emergency rule in Rivers State as soon as peace and stability return. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this known during an interview.

According to Idris, President Bola Tinubu is dedicated to restoring democracy in Rivers State. He assured that once the situation improves, the government will reinstate all democratic structures without delay.

Idris explained that the president had no choice but to act due to the collapse of governance in the state. He stressed that the decision was made in line with the constitution and not for political reasons.

“The president has no plan to take over the governance of Rivers State or appoint a new governor. His only goal is to bring back order and ensure the three arms of government function properly,” Idris stated.

The minister dismissed speculations that the emergency rule was imposed for personal or political gain. He said the action was taken to restore order and ensure that democracy functions as it should.

President Tinubu declared the emergency rule last week, leading to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all state assembly members. In their place, retired naval officer Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed as the sole administrator.

The government has assured that the emergency rule will not last longer than necessary, and normal governance will resume once peace is fully restored in the state.
