Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has been named the winner of the 2025 Founder’s Sunhak Peace Award. The Sunhak Peace Prize Foundation will present the award in Seoul, South Korea, on April 11, 2025.
Jonathan is the first African leader to receive this honor. He joins past winners such as former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
The Sunhak Peace Prize Committee selected Jonathan for his efforts in promoting peace and democracy across Africa. Through his work with the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF), the West African Elders Forum (WAEF), and the International Summit Council for Peace (ISCP), he has played a key role in resolving conflicts and supporting democratic governance.
The Sunhak Peace Prize has two categories: the Founder’s Sunhak Peace Award and the Sunhak Peace Prize. Both awards recognize individuals and organizations working towards global peace and human development.
Alongside Jonathan, three others will receive the Sunhak Peace Prize:
- Patrick Awuah Jr. – Founder and President of Ashesi University, Ghana
- Hugh Evans – Co-founder and CEO of Global Citizen
- Wanjira Mathai – Regional Director for Africa at the World Resources Institute
José Manuel Durão Barroso, Chair of the Sunhak Peace Prize Committee and former President of the European Commission, announced their selection.
The Sunhak Peace Prize was founded in 2015 by Hak Ja Han Moon to honor those making outstanding contributions to world peace. The award focuses on three key areas: human rights, conflict resolution, and environmental conservation.
Jonathan’s recognition highlights his dedication to peace and democracy, reinforcing his impact across Africa. His work continues to inspire leaders and advocates for peace worldwide.
