State of emergency: Tinubu wants to capture economic soul of Rivers – Hilda Dokubo

Veteran Nollywood actress and politician Hilda Dokubo has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu over his decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State. She accused him of trying to take control of the state’s economy under the guise of political intervention.

On March 18, 2025, President Tinubu announced a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the House of Assembly for six months. He explained that this decision was based on the ongoing political crisis in the state. However, the move has triggered mixed reactions across Nigeria.

Reacting on Instagram, Hilda Dokubo criticized Tinubu’s action, calling it “shameless.” She argued that Rivers State had been peaceful for two years and questioned why an emergency was suddenly necessary.

She wrote:

“State of emergency because for two years we have had peace!
State of emergency because you want to capture the economic soul of Rivers State!
State of emergency because of one man?
Shameless! Perhaps Mr. President should say he wants to annex Rivers State.”

Dokubo also referenced George Orwell’s famous book Animal Farm, suggesting that Rivers State citizens should receive it as a “palliative” and urged the president to control those enforcing his orders.

The state of emergency in Rivers has sparked debates, with many questioning whether the move is justified or politically motivated. Some believe it is necessary to resolve the crisis, while others, like Dokubo, see it as an attempt to take over the state.
