A Nigerian woman, who claims to be the daughter of a retired and sick police officer, has sent a strong message to security officers. She urged them not to allow the government to use them against citizens who are protesting against the economic crisis.
Reports suggest that some Nigerian youths are planning a “30 Days Movement” campaign. During this period, they will use social media to talk about the hardship they face. The movement is said to be inspired by a youth corps member who was criticized for speaking against the government’s economic policies.
Reacting to this planned movement, the woman warned that the government might send police officers and soldiers to arrest the protesting youths. However, she advised officers to think carefully before following such orders.
She reminded them that they are also Nigerians facing the same economic struggles. She questioned why they should fight against their own people when they also suffer from the country’s poor conditions.
Sharing her father’s story, she revealed that he served in the police for 25 years but suffered a stroke and brain damage over a year ago. Since then, her family has struggled to pay his medical bills, even selling their land and properties. She expressed disappointment that the police department only gave them ten thousand Naira for support.
She urged officers to look at the widows of their dead colleagues and see how they are struggling. She also asked them to consider their sick colleagues and the condition of their children.
According to her, many children of police officers have become wayward due to the hardship in the country. She blamed the government for their suffering, saying her own father’s children are angry and losing their way because of the failed system.
She encouraged police officers and soldiers to reject orders that do not benefit the masses, reminding them that they also live in Nigeria and face the same reality.
