Nigerian defender Igoh Ogbu has shared that he once declined an opportunity to play for Norway, as he was determined to represent the Super Eagles.
Ogbu started his European career in Norway, joining Rosenborg after performing well at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland. The 25-year-old also played for Levanger and Sogndal before moving to Lillestrøm.
His impressive performances at Lillestrøm earned him a transfer to Czech club Slavia Prague. During his final season in Norway, he had the option to switch allegiance and play for the Norwegian national team. However, he chose to wait for a call-up from Nigeria.
“There was a chance to play for Norway in my last season with Lillestrøm,” Ogbu told SCORENigeria. “But I always knew that I would get my chance with the Super Eagles.”
Now, Ogbu has been included in Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. This proves his patience has paid off, as he finally gets to wear the green and white jersey of the Super Eagles.
