Popular Nigerian comedian and activist, Adebowale Adedayo, also known as Mr Macaroni, has spoken out against the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for allegedly threatening a corps member over a viral video.
A Lagos-based youth corper, Ushie Uguamaye, recently posted a TikTok video criticizing the economic situation in Nigeria. In the video, she expressed her frustration with the hardship in the country and called President Bola Tinubu a “terrible leader.”
Following the viral video, Uguamaye claimed she had been receiving threats from NYSC officials, who pressured her to delete the clip.
Reacting to this, Mr Macaroni took to social media to challenge the NYSC. He stated that all Nigerian citizens, including corps members, have the right to question the government and express their opinions.
Addressing NYSC officials, he wrote, “You cannot threaten, intimidate, or victimize any corper for speaking on the president’s performance. They are citizens with rights! The president is in office to serve every Nigerian. Whether corper or not, everyone has the right to hold their leaders accountable.”
Mr Macaroni’s statement has sparked discussions about freedom of speech and the role of youth corps members in national affairs. Many Nigerians have supported his stance, arguing that every citizen should be free to express their concerns without fear.
What do you think? Should corps members be allowed to speak freely about political issues? Share your thoughts in the comments!
