A tragic incident occurred in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, where police shot and killed an 18-year-old boy, Chinedu Abimbor.
The incident took place on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at a police checkpoint in the town. According to eyewitnesses, Chinedu was driving a Mercedes-Benz when police officers flagged him down. However, he refused to stop, which led one of the officers to fire at his car, killing him.
His younger brother, who was in the car with him, was immediately arrested by the police.
Following the shooting, angry youths and Chinedu’s family took to the streets of Ekpoma on Thursday, demanding justice. They also stopped at the palace of the traditional ruler, HRH Anthony Ehizogie Abumere II, calling for the release of Chinedu’s brother.
One of the protesters, Lucky Adaba, claimed that when they went to the police station to ask about the incident, officers used tear gas on them and fired shots. He also alleged that police officers in Ekpoma often harass young men driving cars.
The Edo State Police Command has ordered a full investigation into the case. In a statement, the Command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, said the incident involved a joint security team and an unregistered Mercedes-Benz.
The Commissioner of Police, Betty Otimenyin, has withdrawn three patrol teams linked to the shooting and assured the public that justice will be served. She also sent condolences to Chinedu’s family and urged people to remain calm.
The case is now under investigation as the public waits for justice for Chinedu Abimbor.
