Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called on the members of the State House of Assembly to put aside political differences and focus on peace for the benefit of the people. He made this appeal while commissioning projects in Okrika Local Government Area.
Fubara emphasized that peace is necessary for good governance and urged all political actors to move forward, respecting the Supreme Court’s ruling of February 28, 2025. The ruling outlined several key decisions, including recognizing Speaker Martins Amaewhule and directing the governor to re-present the 2025 budget.
The governor’s appeal follows an incident where he was denied access to the Assembly Quarters while attempting to re-present the budget. While he claimed to have informed Speaker Amaewhule of his visit, the Assembly denied receiving any communication.
Meanwhile, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, stated in a media chat that the lawmakers had the right to remove Fubara from office if he was guilty of impeachable offenses, such as withholding their salaries.
The Supreme Court also ruled that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other financial institutions must not release funds to the Rivers State Government until it complies with court orders. Additionally, the court invalidated the local government election held on October 5, 2024, and ordered a fresh election.
Fubara reassured Rivers residents that he is committed to peace and development. He urged all political stakeholders to work together for the progress of the state.
