Oyebanji government resolves chieftaincy dispute in Ilawe Ekiti

The Ekiti State Government has successfully settled a chieftaincy dispute in Ilawe Ekiti, a town in Ekiti Southwest Local Government Area. The conflict arose over the appointment of Mrs. Regina Oluwafemi as the Ajakarinde of Okebedo Quarters.

Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye led the mediation process in Ado Ekiti, warning that any unrest in the town could hinder Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s rural development plans.

The dispute began when Mr. Maurice Agbadaola, head of the Ogbojana family, accused some individuals of manipulating the selection process.

He claimed that Chief Maurice Adaramodu, who holds the title of Ajana of Okebedo Quarters, failed to inform him about the nomination process, despite his role as the family leader.

At a meeting with key stakeholders, Deputy Governor Afuye confirmed that the installation conducted by Oba Adebanji Alabi, the Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti, was valid. However, she urged Mrs. Oluwafemi to reach out to the aggrieved family members to ensure peace.

Mr. Agbadaola expressed his frustration over being excluded from the process. He clarified that three family lineages—Olukorode, Faparusi, and Fatukesi—have always been eligible for the chieftaincy title.

Oba Alabi, represented by Joe Jegede, insisted that traditional procedures were followed before the installation. He explained that the family had been divided over the chieftaincy title since 2020, leading to government intervention.

Mrs. Oluwafemi denied allegations that she was imposed on the family. She stated that her selection followed traditional Ifa consultation and family consensus. She pledged to unite the family and strengthen their ties.

The Chairman of the Council, Hon. Richard Apolola, assured that the government’s decision to maintain peace would be enforced.

With this resolution, the government hopes to restore unity in Ilawe Ekiti and prevent further disputes.
