NPFL rescinds ban on former Rivers United media director

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has decided to lift the ban on Sammy Wejinya, the former media director of Rivers United.

Wejinya was banned from all NPFL activities for the rest of the season after he published a viral story about an incident at the Lafia Township Stadium. The league viewed the report as damaging to its reputation.

However, after he requested a retrial and apologized, the NPFL set up a panel to review his case. He appeared before the panel on March 3, 2025, where he gave a verbal apology and explained why he had missed an earlier invitation.

NPFL chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye confirmed the decision, stating that the league’s goal is to correct, not punish, its players, officials, and clubs.

With the ban lifted, Wejinya can now return to NPFL activities.
