The National Council of Women Societies (NCWS) has expressed concern over the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, saying it has further reduced the number of women in the Nigerian Senate.
During a press briefing in Calabar, Chief Majorie Asuquo, NCWS President in Cross River State, noted that before the suspension, only four women were in the 109-member Senate. Now, with Natasha’s suspension, only three women remain. She described this as a setback for gender representation in Nigerian politics.
While she avoided further comments because the matter is in court, she emphasized that women have been facing political marginalization for a long time.
Adding to the discussion, Rev. Grace Ekanem, the pioneer president of NCWS in Cross River, pointed out the imbalance in political appointments across the country. She stressed the need for more opportunities for women in governance.
She also spoke about the importance of girl-child education, urging parents to prioritize their daughters’ schooling over early marriages. According to her, an educated woman contributes better to her home, her husband, and society at large.
NCWS continues to advocate for increased female representation in politics and equal opportunities for women in all aspects of life.
