The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested four people for the killing of a 70-year-old woman, Mama Talatu Joshua, in Jinga village, Kirfi Local Government Area.
According to a police statement released on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, the incident happened after the wife of one of the suspects, Ramatu Yusuf, fell sick. She consulted a traditional healer, who claimed that Mama Talatu was responsible for her illness.
On March 2, 2025, while Mama Talatu was returning home from St. Benedict Catholic Church, the suspects confronted her. They accused her of witchcraft and threatened her before attacking her with sticks, knives, and cutlasses. Sadly, she died from the injuries.
A petition filed by a law firm on behalf of the victim’s family alleged that the police officers in Kirfi did not take action immediately after the incident. However, the police have now arrested the suspects and are investigating the case.
This tragic event highlights the dangers of superstition and false accusations. The authorities urge the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands and report such cases to the police instead.
