Ballon d’Or: Liverpool icon, McManaman picks LaLiga star to win award

Former Liverpool star Steve McManaman has named Barcelona winger Raphinha as a top contender for the 2025 Ballon d’Or. The Brazilian has been in outstanding form this season, helping his team stay ahead in LaLiga and making progress in both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.

Barcelona recently advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals after defeating Benfica in the Round of 16. Many believe Raphinha could win the prestigious award if he leads his team to Champions League glory this season.

The Brazilian forward has been a key player for Barcelona, scoring 27 goals and providing 19 assists in 41 matches across all competitions. His performances have helped the team reach the Copa del Rey semifinals and the Champions League quarterfinals while staying on top of LaLiga.

Speaking on TNT Sports, McManaman, now 53, praised Raphinha’s performances and insisted that he should be part of the Ballon d’Or conversation.

“As a winger, he needs to be discussed,” McManaman said. “We always talk about Mo Salah, but we must also include this gentleman in the conversation.”

The former Real Madrid player also mentioned other possible winners, highlighting that the Champions League winner will have the best chance of securing the Ballon d’Or.

“Likewise, Robert Lewandowski and Harry Kane are in the race, and it all depends on who wins the Champions League,” he added. “They all deserve recognition, but the player who lifts the trophy will likely be the favorite.”

Raphinha will aim to maintain his strong form as Barcelona prepares to face Atletico Madrid in a crucial LaLiga match on March 16.
