Trump calls Canada a tariff abuser amid electricity surcharge

US President Donald Trump has criticized Canada, calling it a “tariff abuser” after Ontario announced a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to three US states—Michigan, Minnesota, and New York. These states rely on Canadian power for 1.5 million homes and businesses.

Trump responded by saying the US does not need Canadian energy, cars, or lumber. He also warned that Canada would soon realize the impact of US trade actions.

The US president has been pushing for new trade policies to address what he calls unfair trade deals. He has announced that starting April 2, the US will impose reciprocal tariffs on all countries.

Trump has also suggested annexing Canada and has frequently changed trade policies affecting Canadian businesses. Recently, he allowed 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports but later introduced some exemptions.

The ongoing tensions between the US and Canada could affect trade and economic relations, as businesses on both sides prepare for possible disruptions.
