Stop student loan beneficiaries from leaving Nigeria – Mutfwang tells FG

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has asked the Federal Government to create policies that stop students who benefit from government loans from leaving Nigeria after their studies.

Speaking in Jos during a meeting with the Managing Director of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Akintunde Sawyerr, the governor said brain drain is a big problem, especially in the health sector.

He pointed out that Nigeria is losing many well-trained doctors, even though the government spends a lot of money on their education.

To address this, Mutfwang suggested that students who receive loans should sign agreements to work in Nigeria for a certain period before moving abroad.

He also urged the government to provide better salaries, career growth opportunities, and good working conditions to encourage professionals to stay.

Reports show that about 16,000 doctors have left Nigeria in the last five years. The governor believes that those who receive public funds for education should show patriotism by helping develop the country.

On his part, NELFUND’s CEO, Akintunde Sawyerr, assured the governor that President Bola Tinubu is committed to making education accessible to all Nigerian students.
