The ongoing political crisis in Rivers State is far from over, as some members of the State House of Assembly have refused to meet with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The governor had invited the lawmakers to a meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt through a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo.
This invitation followed a Supreme Court ruling that reinstated 27 lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
These lawmakers had earlier given Governor Fubara a 48-hour deadline to re-present the 2025 budget after their reinstatement. Many hoped the meeting would help resolve the nearly two-year-long political crisis in the state.
However, reports indicate that the lawmakers have decided not to attend the meeting. One of them, Lolo Isaiah Opuende, stated in a video that it was time for both sides to “dey their dey” (stay on their own). He recalled that their leader had predicted a time when both groups would go separate ways.
Opuende also criticized the way the invitation was sent, questioning why the governor posted it on social media instead of delivering it formally. He insisted that if the governor wanted them to attend, he should send a proper invitation.
With tensions still high, it remains to be seen how the crisis in Rivers State will unfold.
