US, French top diplomats hold call about ending Ukraine war

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot about ways to end the Russia-Ukraine war. The US State Department confirmed this in a statement on Friday.

During the call, Rubio emphasized President Donald Trump’s commitment to achieving a fair and lasting peace through negotiations. He also said that the US would continue working with France to bring the war to an end.

Recently, French President Emmanuel Macron met with Trump at the White House to discuss various global issues, including the war in Ukraine.

Trump has repeatedly said he wants the conflict, which began over three years ago when Russia invaded Ukraine, to end. He also stressed that Europe must take more responsibility for its security.

A week ago, Trump had a tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office. Following this, he paused military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. This move is seen as an effort to push Kyiv to accept a ceasefire agreement.

European leaders have since shown strong support for Zelenskyy, but their overall security strategy still depends heavily on the US.

Trump has also said he is considering strict sanctions on Russia, including banking restrictions and trade tariffs. He hopes these measures will push Russia toward a ceasefire and peace agreement with Ukraine.

For now, the future of the Russia-Ukraine war remains uncertain as international discussions continue.
