R. Kelly may be in prison, but that hasn’t stopped him from singing and making music. The R&B singer, who is serving a 30-year sentence, recently appeared on the podcast Inmate Tea with A&P. During the interview, he sang parts of his songs When a Woman’s Fed Up (1998) and Step in the Name of Love (2003).
Despite his legal troubles, Kelly said he still loves music. “Singing is a beautiful disease that can’t be cured … I’m always singing,” he shared. He also claimed to have written 25 albums while in prison.
Currently held at a federal prison in North Carolina, Kelly mentioned that he is “working on getting out” and is using patience as his strategy. Although he was sentenced to 20 years in Chicago for other crimes, most of that time will be served along with his 30-year sentence. In February, a court confirmed that his convictions and sentence would remain in place.
Kelly’s lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, remains hopeful. She told TMZ that he is in “good spirits” and not giving up on his appeal. “No one should count him out,” she said.
For now, Kelly continues to sing and create music while waiting for the next steps in his legal battle.
