Kidney disease patients in Nigeria now have a reason to breathe a sigh of relief. President Bola Tinubu has approved an 80% subsidy on kidney dialysis, significantly reducing the cost of treatment in federal hospitals.
With this new policy, the price of dialysis has dropped from ₦50,000 to just ₦12,000 per session.
This initiative, led by the Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, is aimed at ensuring that more Nigerians have access to affordable, life-saving dialysis treatment.
The subsidy will be available in over 10 federal medical institutions across the country, including:
- University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan
- Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos
- Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja
- University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin
- University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri
These hospitals are among the top federal medical centers offering specialized care for kidney disease patients.
Kidney dialysis is a critical treatment for people suffering from kidney failure. However, the high cost has made it difficult for many patients to get the care they need. By reducing the price by 80%, this subsidy will:
Make dialysis more affordable for low-income patients
Reduce the financial burden on families
Increase access to life-saving treatment across Nigeria
This subsidy is a major step in improving healthcare in Nigeria. It shows the government’s commitment to making medical treatment more accessible and affordable for all citizens.
Many Nigerians have welcomed this initiative, hoping that it will be a lasting solution for those struggling with the high cost of healthcare.
With kidney disease on the rise, this subsidy could be a game-changer for many patients. If fully implemented, it will save lives and improve healthcare access across Nigeria.
