Activist lawyer Madubuachi Idam has advised the National Assembly to stop focusing on creating more states and instead consider regionalizing Nigeria. He believes regionalization will bring economic competition, encourage development, and reduce insecurity.
In a statement, Idam compared state creation to a “business center” for politicians. He warned that adding more states would only increase inflation and political crises in the country.
He argued that Nigeria’s current states are not productive, as many rely on federal funds without generating their own revenue. According to him, creating more states would only add to the country’s financial burden.
Idam stressed that regionalization is a better solution because it will encourage regions to develop at their own pace. He said competition between regions will drive economic growth and help reduce insecurity.
His comments come as the House of Representatives Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution proposed the creation of 31 new states.
Idam believes that instead of multiplying unproductive states, Nigeria should adopt regionalism, allowing each region to focus on its own progress and self-sufficiency.
