Nigerians should prepare for further reductions in petrol prices as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Dangote Refinery engage in a price war. Both companies have recently lowered their fuel prices, giving consumers more options.
On Monday, NNPC announced its new petrol prices, setting them at N860 and N880 per litre in different locations across the country, including Lagos and Abuja. Many NNPCL retail outlets, such as those along the Kubwa Expressway and near its headquarters, have already adjusted to the new rates.
This move follows Dangote Refinery’s recent decision to reduce its petrol price to N880 per litre, which took effect in partner fuel stations like MRS and other outlets in Abuja. This competition between the two giants is now benefiting Nigerian consumers.
Leaders of two major petroleum marketing groups, the Petroleum Retailers Outlets Owners Association (PETROAN) and the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), believe that Nigerians should expect further petrol price reductions.
Billy Gillis-Harry, President of PETROAN, described this competition as a positive development, saying it helps ease the burden of high fuel costs. He noted that the recent price cuts have brought smiles to many Nigerians struggling with the rising cost of living.
Abubakar Maigandi, President of IPMAN, also praised the situation, calling it the “beauty of deregulation.” He explained that allowing competition in the market leads to lower prices, attracting more investors and benefiting consumers.
The fuel price battle between NNPC and Dangote Refinery began on September 15, 2024, when Dangote started selling petrol at competitive rates. Since February 2025, Dangote’s fuel prices have been lower than NNPC’s, forcing the state-owned company to respond with reductions of its own.
For everyday Nigerians, this price war means more affordable fuel, which can reduce transportation costs and ease financial stress. With further reductions expected, consumers can look forward to even better pricing in the coming weeks.
As NNPC and Dangote Refinery continue their competition, one thing is clear: Nigerians are benefiting from the lower petrol prices.
