Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Washington, DC, on Friday for a meeting with former US President Donald Trump. The two leaders are set to sign an important mineral deal, which is expected to help Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
While some details of the agreement have been shared, the full terms are still unclear. European leaders are also watching closely to see what the deal includes.
Earlier this week, Trump told reporters that Ukraine should “forget about” joining NATO. In response, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine needs security guarantees to achieve a ceasefire. He warned that without these guarantees, the war would continue.
On Thursday, Trump was asked if he had called Zelenskyy a “dictator” last week. He either ignored the question or said he did not remember making the statement.
Earlier this month, Trump criticized Zelenskyy, calling him a “dictator without elections” after Ukraine was left out of initial US-led peace talks with Russia.
Zelenskyy’s visit to the US is expected to focus on strengthening Ukraine’s position in the war and securing more international support.
