Kevin Liles, a well-known hip-hop and R&B music executive, has been accused of sexual assault in a new lawsuit. The case was filed in the New York Supreme Court by a woman who says she worked at Def Jam in the early 2000s.
The lawsuit also names Def Jam Recordings and its parent company, Universal Music Group (UMG), as defendants.
According to the lawsuit, the woman—who remains anonymous—was hired as an executive assistant at Def Jam around 1999. She claims that Liles began sexually harassing her soon after she started working there. She alleges that he made inappropriate comments about her body and appearance.
The woman says the harassment became worse in 2000, with Liles allegedly touching her inappropriately. She claims that in 2002, he tried to make advances toward her, but when she rejected him, he forced himself on her and raped her despite her attempts to resist.
She also accuses Def Jam and UMG of being aware of Liles’ behavior but failing to take action. Her lawyer, Lucas B. Franken, praised her courage for coming forward and encouraged others who may have had similar experiences to speak out.
This is not the first time Liles has faced legal trouble. In 2023, he was named in a lawsuit involving singer Trey Songz, whom he manages. The lawsuit alleged that Liles ignored multiple accusations against Songz. That case was settled for $25 million.
Liles stepped down from his role as Executive Vice President at Warner Music Group in 2023. He also left his position as Chairman and CEO of 300 Elektra Entertainment, a label he co-founded.
The lawsuit against Liles is ongoing.
