Trump ignores UK Prime Minister, pushes Ukraine’s defence responsibility to Europe

US President Donald Trump has made it clear that Europe should be responsible for Ukraine’s security, not the United States.

He made this statement during his first cabinet meeting, just before meeting UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House.

Starmer had urged the US to provide security guarantees to Ukraine to prevent Russian President Vladimir Putin from attacking again. However, Trump’s response shows that Starmer is alone in his request.

During the same cabinet meeting, Trump confirmed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would visit the White House on Friday to sign a major agreement related to Ukraine’s mineral resources. Trump previously hinted that the US had secured a billion-dollar minerals deal with Ukraine.

Zelensky, however, described the agreement as only a first step. He said he hopes for additional deals, including security guarantees from the US, to help protect Ukraine from future Russian aggression.
