The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has strongly criticized former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, for his recent remarks about the January 15, 1966, coup.
Fani-Kayode had claimed that the coup was Igbo-led and insisted that former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, never denied this in his book, A Journey in Service. He argued that those saying otherwise were either misinformed or being dishonest.
However, MASSOB leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu, dismissed these claims, calling them false and hateful towards the Igbo people. In a statement released on Wednesday, Madu accused Fani-Kayode of trying to mislead the public with baseless accusations.
Madu questioned Fani-Kayode’s knowledge of the 1966 coup, asking if he was present during the events or had any direct involvement. He pointed out that if the coup was meant to benefit the Igbo, the plotters would not have planned to install Chief Obafemi Awolowo as a provisional president.
The MASSOB leader also expressed disappointment in Fani-Kayode, who once gained respect among Igbo youths for supporting Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
He accused the ex-minister of being a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” and of attempting to tarnish the reputation of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, a revered Igbo leader.
MASSOB maintains that the 1966 coup should not be labeled as an “Igbo coup” and condemns any attempt to use history to spread division and hatred.
