Senator Natasha drags Akapabio, others to court for N1.3bn over alleged defamation

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central in Nigeria’s Senate, has sued Senate President Godswill Akpabio for defamation.

She claims that Akpabio and his aide made false and damaging statements about her, and she is demanding N1.3 billion in compensation.

The issue began when Natasha opposed the reassignment of her Senate seat after some opposition members switched to the majority. This led to a conflict between her and the Senate President.

In her lawsuit, filed on February 25, 2025, at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Natasha listed Akpabio, the Senate, and his aide, Mfon Patrick, as defendants.

She referred to a Facebook post by Patrick, allegedly written on Akpabio’s instructions, that mocked her appearance and legislative abilities.

Her lawyer, Victor Giwa, stated that the post was defamatory and harmed her reputation. She is asking the court to declare the statements false, stop the defendants from making similar remarks, and order them to pay her N100 billion in damages plus N300 million for legal costs.

The case has not yet been assigned to a judge, and no hearing date has been set.
