7th Edo House of Assembly amended Edo State University Uzairue in error – Ojiezele

A member of the Edo State House of Assembly, Ojiezele Osezua Sunday, has acknowledged that the 7th Assembly made a mistake when it changed the name of Edo State University from Iyamho to Uzairue.

Speaking at a plenary session, Ojiezele, who was part of the Assembly at the time, admitted that the change was not well thought out.

He explained that in 2020, the Assembly altered the name because “Edo University, Iyamho” sounded unclear, making it difficult to identify whether it was a government or private institution. To resolve this, they added “State” and changed “Iyamho” to “Uzairue,” the larger clan where the university is located.

However, upon reviewing the decision, Ojiezele realized that the correct approach would have been to keep the name as Edo State University, Iyamho, since the university is physically located in Iyamho. He now supports reverting to the original name.

The Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, agreed with this position, emphasizing that the 7th Assembly had made an error.

Majority Leader Charity Ighodalo formally proposed the amendment, explaining that the university was initially named Edo State University of Science and Technology, Uzairue, when it was established in 2014 under Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

It was later changed to Iyamho in 2015 and then to Edo University, Iyamho, in 2016. In 2020, under Governor Godwin Obaseki, the name was changed again to Edo State University, Uzairue.

Now, the current Assembly is correcting the mistake by restoring the name to Edo State University, Iyamho. The amendment received strong support from lawmakers, who agreed that it reflects the actual location of the university.

With this latest decision, the university’s name is expected to return to Edo State University, Iyamho, bringing an end to years of back-and-forth changes.
