A 24-year-old Thai woman, Ms. Pattaphi Wimonnat, has been arrested at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos for trying to smuggle drugs into Nigeria.
She was caught with 43 parcels of Canadian Loud, a strong type of cannabis, weighing 46.6 kilograms.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) stopped her during passenger checks at the airport on Thursday, February 20, 2025. She had arrived on a Qatar Airways flight from Thailand via Doha.
According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, Ms. Wimonnat admitted that she was hired by a drug cartel, which promised her $3,000 if she successfully delivered the drugs in Nigeria.
In another case, NDLEA officers also blocked an attempt to ship 68 parcels of Ghanaian Loud (42.2kg) to the UK. The drugs were hidden inside the walls of crated cartons and were seized at the export section of Lagos airport on Friday, February 21.
Three suspects—a freight agent and two dispatch riders—were arrested first. Later, the mastermind of the operation, Samuel Bitris, was tracked down and arrested at his home in Exodus Estate, Ajah, Lagos.
The NDLEA continues to fight drug trafficking and urges people to avoid getting involved in illegal activities.
