Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini has cleared the air after his comments on Ademola Lookman’s penalty miss caused controversy.
After Atalanta’s home defeat to Club Brugge in the UEFA Europa League, Gasperini criticized Lookman for taking a penalty, calling him “one of the worst penalty takers” he had seen. This upset the Nigerian forward, who felt the remarks were disrespectful.
Now, Gasperini has explained that he did not mean to offend Lookman. Speaking to Italian media outlet TMW, he said, “Lookman felt offended, but I didn’t want to offend anyone. He came on with a fantastic attitude against Club Brugge.”
The coach also suggested that Lookman could improve his penalty-taking skills with training. “If he starts practicing penalties, with his exceptional talent, he can become our first-choice penalty taker,” Gasperini added.
With this clarification, it remains to be seen if Lookman will take future penalties for Atalanta.
