Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has shared that she welcomed twin boys in 2024. This addition to her family comes alongside her nine-year-old daughter.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Adichie opened up about her decision to keep the news private. She said she wants to protect her children, adding, “I’m OK with having them mentioned, but I don’t want the piece to become about them.”
Adichie, now 47, has always been private about her personal life. She rarely speaks about her marriage to Dr. Ivara Esege, whom she wed in 2009. She explained that Nigerians are very curious about personal matters, which makes her even more reserved.
After nearly ten years away from fiction, Adichie is preparing to release a new novel, Dream Count. The book explores themes of immigration, motherhood, and marriage. She admitted that motherhood made writing difficult for a long time.
“I was scared I wouldn’t write again. It was unbearable,” she shared. Her breakthrough came after her father’s passing in 2020 when she wrote Notes on Grief.
Looking back at Dream Count, she realized it was deeply connected to her late mother. “It wasn’t intentional, but my God, it’s about my mother. I’m happy it’s not a sad book—she wouldn’t want that,” Adichie said.
Her return to fiction is highly anticipated, and fans are eager to see how her experiences shape her storytelling.
