Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused the United States of trying to “please” Russia in ongoing discussions about ending the war. He warned that if Russia is allowed to dominate these talks, Europe’s military strength will be weakened.
High-level representatives from the US and Russia arrived in Saudi Arabia on Monday for negotiations. However, Zelensky is unhappy with the US approach, especially comments from officials that seem too lenient toward Russia.
Earlier, Zelensky made it clear that Ukraine would not accept any peace agreement reached without its involvement, along with the UK. He criticized the US for wanting a quick deal, saying, “They want just a ceasefire, but that is not a win.”
US President Donald Trump previously promised to end the war between Russia and Ukraine quickly. Last week, he announced that he had spoken directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin about ending the conflict.
Meanwhile, US Defense Chief Pete Hegseth suggested that Ukraine may not be able to join NATO or reclaim the land lost since 2014.
Zelensky stressed that Ukraine would not sign any agreement that compromises its future. “We will reclaim all our territory,” he insisted.
On Monday, European leaders gathered in Paris to discuss strengthening their own military capabilities and supporting Ukraine. While they disagreed with the US approach, they emphasized the need for NATO unity.
Zelensky warned that Europe could not afford to depend entirely on the US for security. He noted that while Europe’s readiness had improved, its military forces were still weak compared to Russia.
Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine has become stronger in the past three years. However, he admitted that without US support, victory would be difficult.
He also revealed that he spoke with Trump about the possibility of deploying foreign troops to monitor a ceasefire. “I told him the Americans should be a part of this, or we risk losing our unity,” he said.
As discussions continue, Ukraine remains firm on reclaiming its territories and refusing any deal that favors Russia.
