Kola Ologbondiyan, a former spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has raised concerns about President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He claims that recent actions by the government are threatening democracy and pushing Nigeria towards a one-party system.
Ologbondiyan outlined several incidents that, in his view, show the government’s anti-democratic tendencies:
National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu recently made strong remarks against Canada over a visa-related issue. Instead of resolving the matter diplomatically, he reportedly dismissed Canada’s concerns. Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar has been focusing on political issues in Bauchi State instead of handling international affairs.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke recently warned of a planned attack in his state, allegedly coordinated by former Governor and current Marine Business Minister, Gboyega Oyetola, who is also a relative of President Tinubu.
When violence erupted, several people lost their lives. Following this, APC’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Bashiru, called for a state of emergency in Osun, which some believe escalated tensions.
The Lagos State House of Assembly experienced a major political struggle. Reports suggest that security agencies, including the DSS and police, were involved in attempts to forcefully remove the Speaker and reinstate the previous one. Ologbondiyan sees this as another attempt to undermine democratic institutions.
Ologbondiyan argues that these events indicate a larger plan to weaken democracy and concentrate power under one party. He warns that if these trends continue, Nigeria’s democratic system could be at serious risk.
Many Nigerians are now watching closely, hoping that democracy remains protected and that all political players respect the rule of law.
