Tensions are rising in Osun State, as the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), calls on the federal government to declare a state of emergency.
This comes after violent clashes in the state, with reports of people being killed.
The state government, led by Governor Adeleke, strongly disagrees with the APC’s demand. The government accuses the APC of deliberately creating chaos in the state to push for a state of emergency.
Senator Ajibola Basiru from the APC suggested that the federal government might need to step in, saying the situation had worsened to the point where innocent people were being attacked by violent groups.
However, Kolapo Alimi, the Osun State Commissioner for Information, rejected this claim, urging President Buhari to ignore the APC’s request. He argued that the APC was intentionally causing trouble and that the state was being targeted.
Violence erupted across the state on Monday as reinstated Local Government chairmen and councillors, backed by a court ruling, tried to take office.
This led to clashes in several areas, including Oshogbo, the state capital. One of the reinstated chairmen, Remi Abbas, was killed during the unrest.
In response to the growing violence, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, ordered the deployment of additional police forces to restore order.
The police condemned the violence and promised to hold those responsible accountable.
