Katsina State has started a new initiative to empower women and support local farmers with the distribution of 40,000 goats.
Governor Dikko Radda announced the project, which is part of a N5.7 billion investment aimed at boosting goat farming and making Katsina a leading producer of livestock in northern Nigeria.
Each of the 361 wards in the Daura Local Government Area received 10 goats, which will be given to women to help them start or grow their farming businesses.
The initiative includes training on animal care, nutrition, and sustainable farming practices to ensure the success of these women farmers.
Governor Radda shared his vision of turning Katsina into a major livestock hub, which will not only improve the state’s economy but also help local communities thrive.
As part of the project, a new goat farm will be set up in Rimi Local Government to focus on breeding high-quality goats for better milk and manure production.
The state government will also create livestock centers for goat health and vaccination, ensuring that the animals stay healthy and strong. Governor Radda expressed thanks to President Bola Tinubu for supporting the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development.
The Emir of Daura, Faruk Faruk, praised the governor’s efforts, saying that this initiative will have a lasting impact on women, orphans, and children by providing them with valuable resources for education and economic empowerment.
Each woman in the program will receive four goats—one male and three females—while larger farmers will get 50 goats.
The beneficiaries are expected to return the same number of animals after a set period, ensuring the project continues to support more people in the future.
