President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed sadness over the death of Chief Edwin Clark, a respected Nigerian leader and elder statesman.
Chief Clark, who led the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), passed away on Tuesday at the age of 97. His family confirmed the news.
Born on May 25, 1927, in Kiagbodo, Delta State, Chief Clark spent most of his life serving Nigeria in different capacities. He worked as a local councillor, a state and federal cabinet member, and a strong voice for the Niger Delta region.
President Tinubu, through his Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga, described Clark as a man who believed in Nigeria’s unity and worked hard for its stability.
He was also known for fighting for resource control, economic fairness, and environmental protection in the Niger Delta.
Chief Clark was a bold leader who never hesitated to stand for what he believed in, even if he was alone. His influence in Nigerian politics spanned nearly six decades.
On behalf of the federal government, President Tinubu extended his condolences to Clark’s family, the Ijaw people, the Niger Delta region, and the Delta State government.
Chief Edwin Clark will be remembered as a passionate advocate, a courageous leader, and a man who devoted his life to the progress of Nigeria.
”Chief Clark spoke for the Niger Delta. He spoke for the nation. His views and interventions on national issues were distinct and patriotic.
”Pa Clark, a lawyer and educationist, believed in a united Nigeria, and until his last breath, he never stopped reaching out to people from different parts of the country to work together to preserve national unity based on justice and equity.
”As an astute politician, his political opponents never doubted his words’ weight, confidence, and conviction when he spoke. Indeed, a patriot has transitioned to the great beyond.
”History will remember him as a man who fought gallantly for the rights of the people of the Niger Delta, unity in diversity, and true federalism.
”I know many generations will remain proud of how his efforts contributed to national prosperity and stability,” the President said in the statement.
President Tinubu prayed for God’s comfort for Chief Clark’s family, friends, and everyone mourning his loss.
