Europe warns against Ukraine ceasefire without peace deal

European leaders met in Paris on Monday to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine. They agreed to support Ukraine but warned that stopping the fighting without a full peace deal could be risky.

The meeting was called by French President Emmanuel Macron after U.S. President Donald Trump planned peace talks with Russia. These talks, set to happen in Saudi Arabia, do not include European allies or Ukraine.

At the Paris meeting, key leaders attended, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Also present were Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, NATO chief Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Antonio Costa.

A European Union official stated that the leaders are open to providing security guarantees for Ukraine. However, they believe that a ceasefire should not happen unless there is a proper peace deal. They also agreed with President Trump’s idea of achieving peace through strength.

The leaders stressed that Ukraine’s security must be a priority and that any solution should involve all key parties, not just the U.S. and Russia.
