Tinubu Approves Recruitment Of 50 Doctors, 100 Nurses For Correctional Centres

President Bola Tinubu has approved the hiring of 50 doctors and 100 nurses to improve healthcare in Nigerian correctional centres.

This decision will help address the medical needs of prisoners across the country, according to a report by News360 Nigeria.

The approval was announced by Babatunde Alao, the spokesperson for the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who mentioned that the president gave this approval through the minister.

The plan also includes allowing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to post medical doctors to correctional facilities during their service year. This initiative is aimed at protecting the rights of the weakest members of society.

To address the shortage of medical staff, the minister also announced that the government will allow existing medical personnel in Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to continue working beyond their retirement age for the time being.

Before Tunji-Ojo became minister, some states, like Rivers, faced a lack of healthcare workers in prisons, making this recruitment effort even more important.

This hiring process will also provide employment opportunities, as it will be an ongoing effort. Additionally, the minister revealed that the renovation of Kuje Correctional Centre has been completed, making it a much better facility.

The improvements include new cells, water supply, and a better hospital, ensuring a safer and more functional environment for inmates.

Tunji-Ojo explained that the president is focused on building long-term solutions for long-term problems while providing quick fixes for short-term issues.

He also highlighted the importance of establishing a National Paramilitary Academy, which would train young citizens to contribute to national security.

The minister also discussed changes to Nigeria’s visa process, which will now be done online, allowing for faster processing within 48 to 72 hours.

On security, he emphasized efforts to improve the Private Guard sector to enhance the country’s overall safety.

This recruitment of doctors and nurses for correctional centres is just one step in the government’s broader effort to improve the country’s infrastructure and services.
