Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to attend the 38th African Union (AU) Summit. He landed on Thursday night and was welcomed by Ethiopian officials, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and other diplomats.
After his arrival, Tuggar briefed Tinubu on the summit’s agenda and Nigeria’s recent diplomatic successes.
One key achievement was the re-election of Ambassador Bankole Adeoye as the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security. The briefing lasted until early Friday morning.
Several Nigerian ministers accompanied Tinubu, including Wale Edun (Finance), Abubakar Badaru (Defence), Jumoke Oduwole (Trade and Investment), Festus Keyamo (Aviation), Muhammed Idris (Information), Balarabe Abbas Lawal (Environment), and Doris Uzoka-Anite (State for Finance).
The theme of the 2025 AU Summit is “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” focusing on historical injustices and racial healing.
During the summit, President Tinubu will speak at the African Union Peace and Security Council meeting. He will address security issues, including the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria on Monday, February 17.
