I’m in my office – Anyanwu snubs PDP NWC, resumes at National Secretariat

The internal crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the position of National Secretary has taken another turn as Samuel Anyanwu resumed at the party’s National Secretariat, ignoring the leadership’s directive.

On Thursday, Anyanwu returned to his office at the PDP headquarters, despite the National Working Committee (NWC) recognizing Sunday Ude-Okoye as the rightful National Secretary.

In a video call with Lere Olayinka, spokesperson for FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Anyanwu confirmed his presence in the office, saying, “As you can see, I’m in my office. These are my people, and we are working.”

The conflict began when Anyanwu stepped down from the position to contest the Imo State governorship election. During his absence, the PDP’s South-East caucus endorsed National Youth Leader, Sunday Ude-Okoye, as his replacement.

However, after losing the election, Anyanwu attempted to reclaim his former role, leading to strong opposition from Ude-Okoye and the party’s leadership.

On December 20, 2024, the Court of Appeal ruled in favor of Ude-Okoye, confirming him as the legitimate National Secretary.

The PDP Governors Forum, the NWC, and the party’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, also backed Ude-Okoye.

The dispute escalated further on January 28, when supporters of both Anyanwu and Ude-Okoye clashed at the PDP National Secretariat during a Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting.

Despite the legal ruling and the party’s position, Anyanwu returned to the office, increasing tensions within the party.

On Thursday, the NWC reaffirmed Ude-Okoye as the PDP’s National Secretary. A statement from the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, confirmed this decision, stating that it aligns with the Appeal Court ruling and that no other court order has overturned it.

The situation remains tense as Anyanwu continues to challenge the party’s decision. It is unclear what action the PDP will take next to resolve the crisis.
