President Donald Trump has removed Paul Martin, the Inspector General of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
This decision came just one day after Martin’s office released a report criticizing the Trump administration’s handling of aid funds.
Reports from The Washington Post and CNN state that Martin received a short email from the White House informing him that he was fired immediately. However, the email did not give a reason for his dismissal.
The report from Martin’s office warned that over $489 million in food aid could go to waste or be misused because the Trump administration had frozen aid funds and stopped work on certain programs.
The report also mentioned that USAID has struggled with staffing cuts and unclear policies, making it harder to manage humanitarian aid effectively.
Trump has a history of removing inspectors general, who are independent government watchdogs.
In total, he has fired 18 of them. Although Paul Martin was appointed by former President Joe Biden, he had remained in office until now.
Trump, who recently started his second term, has been pushing major changes in the government.
He is working with Elon Musk, his top donor and the world’s richest man, to reduce the size of federal agencies or even shut some of them down.
