Ex-Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales says Jenni Hermoso did consent to his infamous World Cup kiss after he asked if it was okay

Former Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales told a court that he was “totally sure” Jenni Hermoso agreed to him kissing her after Spain won the 2023 Women’s World Cup. He claims he asked her for permission, and she said “OK.”

However, Hermoso has denied this, saying she never agreed to the kiss and that it ruined what should have been one of the happiest days of her life.

The incident sparked major controversy, leading Rubiales to resign from his position as head of the Spanish Football Association.

Rubiales faces charges of sexual assault and coercion. Prosecutors are asking for a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence, arguing that he forced the kiss on Hermoso and then pressured her to downplay the situation.

During his court testimony, Rubiales insisted that the kiss was an innocent moment of celebration, not something harmful. He compared it to a New Year’s Eve kiss and even said he used to kiss male footballers as well.

Jenni Hermoso, on the other hand, has made it clear that she never consented to the kiss. In an interview played in court, she admitted she didn’t like it but hoped it would be seen as just a minor incident at the time.

However, the situation quickly escalated, leading to a broader discussion about sexism in sports.

Three other officials, including former Spain women’s coach Jorge Vilda, also face charges of coercion. They allegedly pressured Hermoso to support Rubiales and say the kiss was no big deal.

An expert lip reader also testified in court, analyzing video footage to determine what was said before the kiss.

The defense presented video evidence showing Hermoso laughing during the celebrations, trying to argue that she was not uncomfortable.

Rubiales stepped down three weeks after the scandal and was banned by FIFA from football for three years. He claims he is the victim of a “witch hunt” by “false feminists.”

Prosecutors, Hermoso, and the Spain players’ association are pushing for Rubiales to be jailed, fined €50,000 ($51,800), and banned from working in sports. They also want the other defendants to face prison time.

This case has sparked widespread debate in Spain, highlighting the issue of sexism in sports and beyond. The court’s final decision will be closely watched.
