Nigeria has once again been hit by a major power outage following a collapse of the national grid on Wednesday. This marks the second grid failure in 2025, continuing the country’s struggle with an unstable electricity supply.
According to data from the Nigerian System Operator’s website, the collapse happened around 11:30 AM. However, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has not yet explained the cause of the disturbance.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), saying:
“A system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 AM today (Wednesday), leading to a power outage in our coverage areas. While we have started restoring power gradually, we are working closely with stakeholders to stabilize the grid fully.”
A well-known account monitoring the national grid also reported the incident, saying that parts of the country were affected by the outage.
When contacted for a statement, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah mentioned she was in transit and promised to respond later.
This latest power failure follows a similar collapse on January 11, 2025. In 2024, the national grid reportedly failed about 12 times, raising concerns about the reliability of Nigeria’s electricity supply.
Authorities are currently working to restore power, but many Nigerians remain frustrated with the frequent disruptions.
