A devastating fire in Gyinyaase, a suburb of the Asokwa Municipality in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, has claimed the lives of a mother and her three children.
The victims, 33-year-old Linda Agyemang, a nurse at Kumasi South Hospital, and her children, aged 7 to 14, were trapped inside their three-bedroom apartment when the fire broke out early Saturday morning, February 8, 2025.
The fire started in the middle of the night, destroying the entire house along with properties inside. Other tenants in the building managed to escape, but Linda and her children were unable to get out in time.
A co-tenant, Owusu George, recalled how his wife woke him around 3:30 am to alert him about the fire. He rushed to the scene and could hear the children screaming for help.
“I tried to break the door, but then I heard a loud explosion from the kitchen. I suspect it was a gas cylinder,” Owusu said. Despite efforts to break the window and rescue the children, they could not be saved.
Firefighters received a distress call around 4:30 am and arrived within 10 minutes. However, by the time they extinguished the fire, the four victims were found burnt beyond recognition in the bathroom.
Their remains have been sent to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital morgue for an autopsy. The Ghana National Fire Service has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
This heartbreaking incident has left the community in shock as they mourn the loss of a mother and her children.
