Nollywood, social media, prosperity preaching by religious institutions fueling get-rich-quick syndrome — Remi Tinubu

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has raised concerns about the growing get-rich-quick mentality in the country.

She believes this mindset is encouraged by social media, Nollywood movies, and prosperity preaching in religious institutions. According to her, this unhealthy desire for quick wealth is one of the main reasons human trafficking is increasing in Nigeria.

She shared her thoughts on February 7 when the Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Binta Bello, visited her at the State House in Abuja.

The agency briefed her on its recent operations, including a raid on a baby factory in Abuja, where 19 pregnant young girls were rescued.

Mrs. Tinubu emphasized the importance of hard work and patience. She warned young people to avoid falling for promises of fast wealth, as it often leads them into dangerous situations, including human trafficking.

She also pledged her full support to NAPTIP in its fight against trafficking.

“The get-rich-quick mentality is making things worse,” she said.

Even religious institutions now focus on prosperity preaching, yet the Bible talks about hard work. Social media and Nollywood also contribute to this issue.”

Her statement highlights the need for a cultural shift. Young people must understand that true success comes from dedication and perseverance, not shortcuts that often lead to exploitation.

She called for a nationwide re-orientation to promote values like patience, honesty, and hard work.

This message serves as a reminder for individuals, religious groups, and media platforms to promote positive values that encourage legitimate success rather than quick and risky ways of making money.
